My Experience Building a Personal Website
Building my personal website was a valuable learning experience that helped me understand how websites are created, customized, and managed using WordPress. I chose WordPress.com as my platform because it provides a user-friendly environment where I can build and manage a website without having to configure a hosting server or install WordPress manually. Another reason for choosing this platform was the variety of tools available to customize the website’s appearance, organize content, and create a professional-looking design without requiring advanced programming knowledge.
During the process, I learned how to navigate the WordPress dashboard and use the different tools available to build my website. One of the main challenges I encountered was understanding how the Site Editor works and how to customize templates, headers, footers, and other elements of the website. At first, some options were unfamiliar, and it took time to understand how changes to templates could affect different pages across the site. Learning how to organize content using blocks, patterns, and layouts also required some practice. However, by exploring the available features and experimenting with different settings, I gradually became more comfortable using the platform.
Another important part of this experience was learning how to improve a website’s functionality, performance, and accessibility. I discovered that creating a website involves more than choosing an attractive design. It is also important to organize information clearly, use appropriate headings, optimize images, choose readable fonts, and ensure that the website works correctly on different devices. I also learned about search engine optimization (SEO), website security, caching, and the importance of keeping themes and plugins updated. These concepts helped me understand the different factors that contribute to creating a reliable and user-friendly website.
One of the most important things I learned is that WordPress provides many possibilities for building websites without writing code. Features such as the Block Editor, Site Editor, templates, and block patterns make it easier to create and customize pages according to specific needs. At the same time, understanding how these features work together allows users to make better design decisions and manage their websites more effectively. I also realized that building a website is an ongoing process that requires testing, adjustments, and continuous improvement.
Overall, this experience helped me develop a better understanding of WordPress and the website creation process. It allowed me to explore tools that I had not used before and understand how different elements work together to create a complete website. As a student of Systems Engineering, I found this experience particularly useful because it connects with my interest in web development and technology. I believe the knowledge I gained will be valuable for future academic projects and professional opportunities, and I look forward to continuing to improve my skills and exploring more advanced WordPress features.
