Reflection: Choosing Your Team and Project

As part of the WP Credits program, I chose to contribute to the Polyglots team, the WordPress community responsible for translating WordPress into different languages. I decided to join this team because I believe that making technology accessible to people in their native languages is an important part of building an inclusive and global community.

Why I Chose the Polyglots Team

One of the main reasons I chose the Polyglots team was my interest in languages, technology, and open-source software. WordPress is used by people all around the world, and translations help make the platform accessible to users who may not be comfortable using English.

I believe that localization is essential to providing a better user experience. By translating WordPress content, I can help more people understand and use the platform in their preferred language. I also wanted to learn more about how an international open-source project works and how contributors collaborate to maintain the quality and consistency of translations.

As a Computer Systems Engineering student, I am interested in understanding the different aspects of software development beyond programming. Contributing to translations has allowed me to explore another important part of the software development process: ensuring that technology is accessible and understandable to a wider audience.

My Contribution Project

My contribution project focused on translating WordPress content through the Polyglots team on WordPress.org. During my participation, I completed 335 translation contributions on WordPress.org.

This experience helped me understand the importance of accurate translations and consistent terminology in software localization. Translating content requires more than simply converting words from one language to another. It also involves understanding the context, preserving the original meaning, and ensuring that the translated content sounds natural to users.

Through this contribution, I was able to participate in the WordPress open-source community and help improve the experience for Spanish-speaking users. It was also an opportunity to make a practical contribution to a project used by millions of people worldwide.

How This Project Connects with My Skills and Interests

My background in Computer Systems Engineering has helped me understand the technical context behind the software and documentation I contribute to. Although translation is different from programming, both activities require attention to detail, problem-solving, and a clear understanding of how users interact with technology.

This project also connects with my interest in learning how open-source communities operate. I wanted to experience what it means to contribute to a global project, collaborate with other community members, and work toward a shared goal.

Additionally, participating in the Polyglots team has helped me recognize that software quality depends on more than its technical functionality. A platform can be powerful and well-designed, but it also needs to be accessible and understandable to the people who use it.

What I Hope to Learn and Accomplish

Throughout the WP Credits program, I hope to deepen my understanding of the WordPress community and its contribution processes. I also want to improve my ability to collaborate with other contributors, follow project guidelines, and deliver high-quality work.

Another goal is to continue contributing to the Spanish translation of WordPress and help make the platform more accessible to Spanish-speaking users. Completing 335 translation contributions has been a meaningful step, but I see it as part of a continuous learning process.

By the end of the program, I hope to have gained practical experience in open-source collaboration, developed a better understanding of software localization, and strengthened my connection with the WordPress community.

Final Reflection

Choosing the Polyglots team has allowed me to contribute to WordPress in a way that combines my technical background with my interest in making technology accessible to more people. My 335 translation contributions represent not only completed work but also an opportunity to learn, participate, and support a global open-source project.

This experience has shown me that contributing to software does not always mean writing code. There are many ways to make a difference, and translation is one of them. I look forward to continuing my contributions, learning from the community, and discovering how I can create an even greater impact throughout the WP Credits program.
