WP Credits Final Report: My Contribution to WordPress Polyglots

Introduction

My name is Heynner Calvo, and I am a Computer Systems Engineering student from Costa Rica. This is my final report for the WP Credits program, where I participated as a contributor to the WordPress Polyglots team.

The purpose of this report is to summarize my contributions, the challenges I encountered, the resources I used, and the skills I developed throughout the program. This experience allowed me to learn more about the WordPress open-source community and understand how people from different backgrounds collaborate to improve a platform used around the world.

Teams and Projects I Contributed To

During the WP Credits program, I contributed to the Polyglots team, which focuses on translating WordPress into different languages and making the platform accessible to users worldwide.

My main contribution was translating WordPress content through WordPress.org. I completed 335 translation contributions, helping improve the availability of WordPress content for Spanish-speaking users.

This project helped me understand that localization is an important part of software development. Translation requires more than replacing words from one language with another. It involves understanding context, preserving meaning, using consistent terminology, and ensuring that the final result is clear and natural for users.

Learning Resources

Throughout the program, I used the WP Credits lessons, WordPress.org, and the resources available through the WordPress community to understand how contributions work.

The Polyglots team’s documentation and communication channels helped me become more familiar with the translation process and the importance of following established guidelines. The program’s lessons also introduced me to different ways of participating in the community, including Slack discussions and opportunities to learn from other contributors.

These resources helped me understand the structure of the WordPress project and the role that individual contributors play in maintaining and improving it.

Challenges and Solutions

One of my main challenges was creating accounts and navigating the different platforms required by the program. Some processes were not entirely intuitive, which made getting started more difficult than I expected.

I addressed these difficulties by exploring the available resources, following the instructions provided in the lessons, and becoming familiar with the different tools step by step.

Another challenge was understanding how the WordPress community organizes its work. There are different teams, documentation resources, and communication channels, and learning how they fit together required time and patience.

I handled this by focusing on the instructions relevant to my contribution team and gradually becoming more comfortable with the workflow.

These experiences taught me that joining an open-source project requires initiative, persistence, and a willingness to learn unfamiliar tools and processes.

My Contributions

My main contribution was working on WordPress translations through the Polyglots team.

  • WordPress.org translation contributions: Completed 335 translation contributions.
  • Contribution area: Polyglots and software localization.
  • Primary goal: Help make WordPress content more accessible and understandable for Spanish-speaking users.

My contributions can be explored through the official WordPress.org translation platform:

Key Learnings from the WP Credits Program

One of the most important lessons I learned is that open-source contribution involves more than programming. Translation, documentation, communication, and community support are also essential to the success of a software project.

I also learned that collaboration is an important part of maintaining software quality. Contributors need to follow shared guidelines, communicate clearly, and consider how their work affects users.

Another important takeaway is that learning to contribute to an established project takes time. Understanding the tools, processes, and expectations of a community is part of the experience, and asking questions or consulting documentation can help overcome initial difficulties.

Overall, the WP Credits program gave me a better understanding of how a global open-source community operates and how individual contributions can support a shared goal.

New Skills Gained

Throughout the program, I developed and strengthened several technical and interpersonal skills.

Technical skills:

  • Understanding software localization and translation workflows.
  • Navigating WordPress.org and its contribution resources.
  • Following guidelines to maintain consistency and quality in translated content.
  • Becoming familiar with the tools and communication channels used by an open-source community.

Soft skills:

  • Problem-solving when working with unfamiliar platforms.
  • Attention to detail and consistency.
  • Independent learning and research.
  • Communication and collaboration in a distributed community.
  • Patience and adaptability when learning new processes.

As a Computer Systems Engineering student, these skills complement my academic background and help me understand software development from a broader perspective.

Personal Reflections and Next Steps

One of the most valuable aspects of this experience was discovering how many different ways there are to contribute to an open-source project. Before participating, it was easy to associate software development primarily with writing code. Through the Polyglots team, I learned how translation can also make a meaningful difference in the way people interact with technology.

I was also surprised by how much time it can take to become familiar with the tools and processes of a large community. Although setting up accounts and navigating some platforms presented challenges, the experience helped me become more persistent and independent when solving problems.

After completing the WP Credits program, I would like to continue exploring opportunities to contribute to WordPress, particularly through translations and localization. I also hope to apply what I learned about collaboration, documentation, and community participation to future academic and professional projects.

Conclusion

My participation in the WP Credits program has been a valuable learning experience. Completing 335 translation contributions through the Polyglots team allowed me to make a practical contribution to WordPress while developing a better understanding of open-source collaboration.

The program helped me recognize the importance of accessibility, communication, and continuous learning in software projects. Despite the initial challenges of navigating different platforms, I gained useful experience and a clearer understanding of how I can contribute to a global technology community.

I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in the WordPress community, and I hope to continue contributing to projects that make technology more accessible and useful to people around the world.
